UCLA Graduate Student Water Resources Group Welcomes New and Continuing Members to the 2018-2019 School Year

During the 2017-2018 school year, the Graduate Student Water Resources Group (GSWRG) put on three well-attended seminars, featuring water experts discussing water conservation, sustainable groundwater management plans and stormwater management in Los Angeles County. In the spring, the 2017/2018 co-chairs recruited new co-chairs for 2018-2019. Six graduate students from five different graduate programs at UCLA applied. They were brimming with ideas, and so talented and enthusiastic that they became the first five member UCLA Graduate Students Resources Group Executive Board. This board intends to expand the activities of the GSWRG, and expand participation by graduate students across disciplines.

Abdullah Aleidan (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) and Emilie Tarouilly (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) will be recruiting speakers for the yearlong seminar series. Speakers will include faculty water experts, experts from private industry, government and the nonprofit sector. Reflecting the multidisciplinary GSWRG membership, talks will range over a wide variety of water topics.

Jacob Schaperow (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) will solicit and organize graduate student research presentations and discussions. Each meeting will feature several short presentations with by feedback and comments from the attendees, followed by a networking reception.

Peter Roquemore (Department of Urban Planning) will be in charge of communications, reaching out to new graduate students, and helping to grow our listserv. He will also be talking to graduate students about grants that students can apply for to use in working on projects with faculty.

Laura Yraceburu (UCLA School of Law) will be chairing the group, handling funding, and social activities.
