This year’s food recovery systems team will examine topics like food security, sustainable food systems, and eliminating food waste to determine how UCLA can increase food security while eliminating existing food waste. The team will determine the quantity of food disposed of in UCLA Dining Halls that is salvageable and work with the UCLA Community Programs Office (CPO) to devise a food recovery plan. The team will also conduct waste audits of UCLA Dining Halls and examine the university’s current steps towards food recovery. This year’s team will also work with existing organizations, such as Bruin Dine or Swipe out Hunger, to determine the best practices of reducing student hunger through diverting food waste from UCLA Dining Halls. The team also plans to expand upon the UCLA Food Recovery Implementation Guide created by UCLA Zero Waste and the CPO and determine how best to promote equitable and sustainable food systems.
