UCLA, already ranked the No. 1 public university in the country for the eighth consecutive year by the U.S. News & World Report, has now been recognized as the No. 10 university in Niche.com’s annual “Best Colleges for Environmental Science” rankings.

Niche.com, a college-review platform that rates over 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities, bases its rankings on a rigorous analysis of academic, admissions, financial and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education, as well as millions of reviews from students and alumni.

In addition to securing a spot in the top 10 for environmental science, UCLA stands out as the top UC for environmental science, surpassed only by Stanford in California. Beyond this distinction, 15 additional UCLA academic programs were ranked in the top 10, including anthropology and sociology, education, psychology, political science and design.

UCLA’s dedication to environmental science goes back decades. The university established its pioneering Environmental Science and Engineering doctoral program in the 1970s, followed by the launch of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability in the 1990s and more recently, the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA Law in 2008.

Through the IoES Practicum Program, undergraduates can work directly with organizations such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and The Nature Conservancy on projects that address local and global environmental challenges. These hands-on experiences ensure students graduate from UCLA with not just academic knowledge, but practical skills to tackle real-world environmental issues.
